Abstract: | At present Kenya has instituted a new system of education commonly known as the 8:4:4 system (based on 8 years of primary education, 4 years of secondary education and 4 years of college or university education). One of the major objectives of the new system is to vocationalize the school curriculum. After defining what is meant by vocational education, the present paper examines significant trends in vocational education and training in Kenya, from the preindependence period to the present, highlights challenges and suggests alternative policies and strategies by which the goals of the new 8:4:4 system of education may effectively be achieved. These include vocational and technical teacher training, crash programmes, preservice programmes, improving cost effectiveness and making technical education a more attractive career choice. Appropriate alternatives for achieving the two major objectives of wage employment and self-employment in vocational training are also discussed. Bibliogr. |
