Abstract:Based on research conducted amongst a sample of ten women's groups in Mombasa North, Kenya, the present study examines factors which determine women's participation in nonformal education. Four research questions guided data collection. What is the educational background of women in groups? What is their socioeconomic background? Why do women decide on certain forms of nonformal education activities and how do they acquire relevant skills? How do women organize nonformal education activities and what problems are experienced in groups? The analysis indicates that a woman's formal education is one of the most important factors determining effective participation in nonformal education. Socioeconomic background also influences women's participation in groups. In the sample studied, group affiliation tended to be ethnically homogeneous. Most women were married and many had children and other family responsibilities. The priority needs of a group influenced the choice of nonformal education activities. Skills were acquired through a number of methods: lectures, demonstrations, exhibitions, educational tours, discussions, visual aids, films and posters. Effective group organization also determined women's participation in nonformal education. Paradoxically, while the need for income motivated many groups to start projects, most of the activities that women engaged in as a group did not seem to be economically productive. Ref.
