Abstract:	AIDS is a social, economic and political reality. One of the most important instruments for constructing, maintaining, modifying and reconstructing reality is language. This paper examines the words and concepts used in describing and perceiving the tangible and intangible reality in both urban and rural Uganda, based on information collected in 1989-1990 in three factories in Kampala and Jinja, and in a subcounty of Kooki County in Rakai District. The concern here is with the social process through which the reality of AIDS is named and explained. The author argues that the ways that groups and communities represent and internalize their understanding of AIDS must be accounted for and integrated into AIDS control programmes. Note, ref., sum.
