Abstract: | The rapidly increasing orphan population may be one of the most tragic consequences of the AIDS epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa. This article describes the results of a study the author carried out in 1989 in four districts in Uganda - Rakai, Masaka, Luwero and Hoima - in order to define the number, status and needs of the most vulnerable children. Data collected suggest that an increase in AIDS mortality may be occurring which will make the orphan burden in Uganda more acute over the coming years. At the same time, other data from the study suggest that the orphan burden may stabilize. Topics on which information was also collected include the schooling status of orphans, guardian age structure and relationships, and orphan and caretaker needs. The results underline the differential gender impact of the AIDS epidemic and women's increased caretaker burden. Despite limitations of the data, aspects of the findings pertaining to parental status, guardian ages and relationships, orphan ages, school status, and pressure on families and communities, may usefully be generalized to other parts of sub-Saharan Africa.
