Abstract: | 'Rárà' chant is peculiar to the '.Oy'.o-speaking people of Yorùbáland in the southwestern part of Nigeria. It is a chanted form of 'oríkì' (praise poetry) rendered principally for entertainment and occasionally for the purpose of obtaining remuneration. This article is limited to an analysis of 'rárà' chanted for the 'Aláàfin' of '.Oy'.o. It explains the role of Yorùbá 'rárà' chanters as traditional imagemakers within Yorùbá society. It opens with a brief description of 'rárà' chant and 'rárà' chanters and goes on to look at examples of royal imagemaking in 'rárà' chants. Bibliogr., notes, ref. |
