Abstract: | The struggle for democracy continues vigorously in the Sudan, despite the unprecedented, oppressive policies of the current Islamic fundamentalist military regime which came to power in June 1989. This struggle culminated in the formation of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), a pro-democracy coalition of opposition groups which signed a major charter detailing their agenda for a plan of action against the military government and a programme for a national transitional government prior to the reinstitution of democratic rule. This paper points to the real obstacles on the road to establishing a more stable democratic rule in the Sudan. In this context, three major issues, which represent frontiers of democratization of the country, are addressed. These are the civil war or the North-South divide, militarism and military intervention in politics, and the role of religion in politics. Recent regional and international developments, the recent split within the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) and Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM), and the resurgence of separatism and calls for self-determination are also taken into consideration.
