Abstract:Text in Italian. English sum.: In Mali, unregistered areas called 'sonsorobougou' play an important part in the urbanization process, serving as settlement areas for poor people in secondary urban centres as well as in the capital, Bamako. The present paper examines how the 'sonsorobougou' in Bougouni, Sikasso and Koutiala operate as land markets, affected by both legal and economic factors. Social factors must also be considered in order to explain the surprising diversity of the 'sonsorobougou'. The 'sonsorobougou' seem to be part of a complex urban process whose stake, land distribution regulated by fragile municipal balances of power, takes on a political signification at the dawn of the Third Republic.
