Abstract:Against the background of the growing problem posed by drug abuse in Nigeria, this study aims to determine the causes of drug abuse among schoolgoing adolescents with a view to finding ways of preventing this social ill. A questionnaire was administered to a sample of 450 secondary school students in Ondo State, Nigeria. The sample was drawn from both mixed and single-sex schools. The results show no significant difference between in-school adolescents in mixed and single-sex institutions as to why they abuse drugs. Among the reasons for taking drugs highlighted by the study are to stay awake, to enjoy social gatherings, to avoid anxiety and because my friends do it. The author argues strongly in favour of preventing drug abuse, amongst others by intensifying school counselling programmes. Bibliogr.
