| Abstract: | This article is the editorial introduction to a special issue on regionalism and the reincorporation of Transkei into South Africa. It starts with a brief résumé of the dramatic events which brought the military regime of Major-General Holomisa to power in 1987. Then it deals with the issues raised around the incorporation question, which are clustered around three broad concerns: class and State in Transkei; political structures and mobilization; and reintegration and transformation.
