Abstract: | This paper uses an agricultural efficiency index based on farm prices to compare yield efficiency of a number of food crops in Tanzania. Spatial variation in agricultural efficiency is also examined using analysis of variance technique for regional comparison. A significant difference in agricultural efficiency was found to exist between regions as well as between production years. The trend shows a significant increase in agricultural efficiency between 1982/83 and 1988/89, with an annual growth rate of between 32.18 (Kilimanjaro) and 134.96 (Rukwa). The author suggests that the annual growth rate is a better criterion for classifying regions than the average agricultural efficiency. Bibliogr., sum. |
