Abstract:To say that Islam determines women's position is meaningless. Just as gender is socially constructed and reconstructed, Islam is reinvented to meet new needs. Drawing on data from fieldwork undertaken in 1980-1982 and in 1988 in Wad al Abbas, a village in northern Sudan, the author explores the interplay between changes in religion, gender relations, and the world economy.
