| Abstract: | This study examines the nature of industrial development in the Border, Transkei and Ciskei (BTC) region of South Africa over the last 30 years. Attention is focused on the strengths and weaknesses of the region's economy and more specifically on the role which industrial development plays in sustaining regional economic development. The study is based on the premise that artificial political borders bear little or no relation to natural economic patterns, processes and structures of dominance and dependence. Numerous studies have pointed out the fundamental economic dominance which the city of East London exerts over the BTC region. This paper first examines the region's industrial base, focusing on industrial development prior to the 1960s, and then presents an outline of State involvement in subsequent years. Thereafter, the factors influencing industrial location in the area are analysed. The region's contemporary industrial structure is assessed relative to the needs for employment creation and sustained growth in the area. The paper concludes with an examination of the potential ramifications of the recent modifications to the decentralization programme and the potential reincorporation of the homelands. Bibliogr. |
