Abstract: | Since 1792, when it assumed the name Freetown, and even before that, this city, first, as the 'province of Freedom', has been many things: the seedling for the diffusion of Western culture and civilization throughout Africa; the headquarters of the British naval squadron and, at various times, of British administration in West Africa; and a social reference point. Most important of all, it is the home of the Krio people who within a hundred years of the evolution of their community, have had a tremendous impact not only on the subregion, but throughout Africa. The author assesses the position of Freetown in the Upper Guinea region and discusses its contribution and that of the Krios to the political, social and economic development of Sierra Leone and the subregion.
