Abstract: | Research on the settlement pattern and dwellings of the early inhabitants of the central interior of South Africa was initially dominated by descriptions of stone-built structures. Huts of reed and grass are, however, also mentioned in the literature and the remains of these have been uncovered during archaeological excavations since the 1970s. Similar huts are at present still known and erected in Lesotho. In this article it is argued that domed thatched huts prevailed in the Orange Free State and Lesotho from the Late Iron Age to the present day. The author focuses attention on the utilization and distribution of this type of hut. Bibliogr., sum. in Afrikaans and English. |
