Abstract: | This paper describes the state of archaeology and art research in Yorubaland, Nigeria, discusses the extent to which archaeology has helped an understanding of Yoruba art, and considers the measure of collaboration between researchers in the two fields. As a result of the importance accorded to the ancient cities of Ile-Ife and Old Oyo, great attention has been paid to them in both archaeological and art history research. Until recently, whenever new artworks were discovered, there was a tendency to link them with either Oyo or Ife. A case in point is the discovery of the Esie stone figures in Kwara State for which Ife/Oyo influences were immediately proposed, although subsequently other possibilities have also been suggested. Apart from Esie, the other known site so far in Ondo State is Owo. The overall picture indicates a complementary interaction between art and archaeology, in the development of research and the understanding of the cultural history of Yorubaland, and in the confirmation of oral historical sources.
