Abstract:This paper analyses differences in technical efficiency among a sample of smallholders in two agroecological zones, a coffee and a non-coffee growing zone, in the Central and Nyanza Provinces of Kenya, on the basis of survey data collected in 1982. The observed differences are analysed in relation to several characteristics of the smallholders, such as age of household head, nonfarm income, extension advice, cattle keeping and migration index, and with the help of both traditional average production function and production frontier estimates based on an output index for all crops cultivated. The results indicate that there are important differences in efficiency between the agroecological zones, but less between the provinces. Access to wealth (in the form of cattle) and to credit has significant and positive effects on efficiency. Bibliogr., sum.
