Abstract: | Women in African cities have their own specific interest in the urban environment and are affected in gender-specific ways by urban development policies. It is necessary to look at the social networks and activities of women as a distinguishable social category. Four strategies utilized by women to improve their living conditions through independent economic activities - economic cooperation between coresidents, house ownership, support networks of social relationships, and business in the neighbourhood - are discussed. These strategies revolve around two urban elements: the house or dwelling, and the neighbourhood. This implies that housing policies should aim to maintain low-income neighbourhoods where socioeconomic relations are well-developed. Bibliogr., sum. |
