Abstract:This article is based on a major research study carried out by the present author from 1988 to 1992 and funded by the Research Board of the University of Zimbabwe. The article looks at the concept of 'teacher effectiveness', including its theoretical analysis and factors said to influence the effectiveness of teachers. These factors include home environment, school climate, academic and professional qualifications, training, experience, teaching methods and gender. Examples are cited from developed countries and from countries in Africa. Bibliogr., sum.
