Abstract: | Analysis of the indigenous resistance to the Americo-Liberian administration from Liberia's foundation in 1882 to 1980 when the Americo-Liberian rulers were overthrown in a military coup d'état. A chronology and typology of Liberian resistance is followed by an examination of the organization and methodologies of the resistance movements. The character of the Liberian State is analysed, particularly its external dependence, and the policies and practices against which resistance was directed are discussed. Finally, the shift in emphasis, in the late 1920s, from armed confrontation to constitutional methods characteristic of modern African nationalism in which the educated elites played a leading role, is dealt with.
