Abstract: | Presentation of the use of operational mourning in the treatment of the case of a psychotic young Nigerian male in individual therapy. A review of the theory and techniques of operational mourning is followed by the case study which describes in detail the successful application of the procedure in the Nigerian context. There seems to be clear evidence that dealing with loss affectively can enhance health and personal growth in states of pathology occasioned by pathological mourning and unfinished business with the dead. In African settings, this paradigm may be especially useful among the educated who have abandoned traditional outlets for grief. Bibliogr., sum. in French and English. |
