Abstract:The Nigerian environment, especially the water environment, has suffered gradual but significant degradation as a result of domestic, industrial, and agricultural activities and the utter neglect on the part of the government of adequate physical and environmental planning. The author surveys the existing statutory and administrative measures on water pollution control and management, as well as the Nigerian court's application of the common law and the way in which it interprets statutes and enactments dealing with water pollution. He concludes with proposals for reform and indicates the need for considerable increases in national (federal, state and local) investment in water resources development and water pollution control.
