Abstract: | Although the main emphasis of the West African farming system is on upland cropping, cultivation in the valleys is also important, producing rice and vegetables during the rainy season, and vegetables only in the dry season. However, the present paddy yields in West Africa as a whole are rather low. This article discusses one way to enhance rice production, viz. the improvement of water control. It deals with the hydrological characteristics of wetlands and small valleys, small-scale water management systems, and the Wetland Utilization Research Programme, which was started in 1982 by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture in Nigeria in order to develop suitable technologies of water, soil, and crop management for the more intensive utilization of the West African small valleys. |
