Abstract: | The Molapo Development Project (MDP) became operational in the Okavango Delta, Botswana, in September 1983. Originally the project aimed at increasing molapo (arable flood plains) crop production in pilot areas by protecting those areas against prolonged high floods. More recently, however, inadequate floods appeared to present an equally severe constraint to crop production. It was therefore decided to focus also on improved crop production under rain-dependent conditions. This article reviews the prospects and constraints of the project. Bibliogr. |
