Abstract:The training of competent teachers is considered to be one of the most persistent and compelling needs in the education system of African countries. Education in Africa, it is suggested, should be development oriented, and the teacher is regarded as the key factor in this. Suitable training is urged for teachers at all levels - primary, secondary and tertiary in the formal, nonformal and informal sectors of education, in apprenticeship programmes, evening classes and on the job-training situations. A sufficiently diversified Teacher Education Programme is proposed for all those who teach in all walks of life and for all skills required in the public and private sector of the economy. It is suggested that fifty percent of university students in Africa should receive teacher education studies in the various academic, commercial, technical, scientific and agricultural fields.
