Abstract: | This paper examines the status of the periodical publications available to Nigerian teachers between February 1927 when the 'Bulletin of Educational Matters' was founded by the Department of Education of Nigeria, and February 1957 when the 'West African Journal of Education' was sponsored by the Department of Education of Nigeria. The paper discusses the content of the publications, the patronage of the periodicals and the contribution made to teacher education work in the country, indicating the importance attached by the colonial administration to scholarly studies on education, sharing of views and opinions in the teaching profession and cooperation between the Education Department and teachers in the furtherance of teacher education through publication. The paper then highlights the various difficulties and limitations of the publishing efforts during the pioneering days and heyday of colonialism in the country. Notes, ref. |
