Abstract: | Jinju (1985) argues that the Bayajida story is a mere folktale full of contradictions which assigns false Arabic origin to the Hausa of northern Nigeria. Other scholars regard Bayajida as a real person who they 'identify' as Abu Yazid Ibn Khaidad Al-Zanati (884-947) and who is believed to have arrived at Daura in the 10th century. The present article offers an alternative analysis of the myth, aiming to discover its unconscious level, to account for inherent contradictions, and to explain it by referring to the economic base necessary for sustaining different forms of social formations and their 'myths' among the Hausa.
