Abstract: | Discussion of ritual symbolism in Igbo traditional religion, distinguishing the following categories: persons, sacred places, sacred things/objects, sacred trees, sacred animals, ritual-symbolic word collocation (words placed together which convey the ritual-symbols they represent), ritual-symbolic word association (ideas or images which are evoked when taking up a ritual object or conceiving it mentally), and ritual-symbolic proverbs. Attention is also paid to the manifestation of the sacred, the interpretation of its meaning, and the reasons for the use of ritual-symbolism. Bibliogr., notes, ref. |
