Abstract:	Italian text. Sum.: The analysis of Maasai society permits us to identify the relationship between the communal appropriation of territory and the familial appropriation of cattle (the latter being dominant) as the constitutive nucleus of a pastoralist social structure. Their combined effect determines a process of production characterized by mobility throughout the territory, and links the strategies ensuring the conditions of reproduction of each family to the communal relationship. The changes caused by colonization weaken the community and strengthen the parental systems. As a result there is a tendency towards the transformation of social inequality into stratification.
