Abstract: | Intensification of land use is identified both by the government (1984) and the World Bank (1983) as the key strategy for increasing agricultural productivity in Kenya. However, this policy, that is more specifically directed to the small-scale farmer, fails to see the different realities experienced by women vis-à-vis men in the process of agricultural change. This article suggests that differentiation between the genders in terms of the impact of, and initiative in, local change is a necessary prerequisite to understanding the nature of the dynamics and contradictions of the rural/agricultural situation. It first describes the roots of a national agricultural policy, and then focuses on Murang'a District, Central Province, Kenya, an area of relatively high agricultural potential. The concern is with 1) changes in land tenure systems with reference to changes in gender relations of production; 2) the significance of export/food crops in terms of the allocation of labour and control over the proceeds of that labour; and 3) local women's groups, formed as a means of coming to terms with the contradictions that define their environments.
