| Abstract: | This paper examines the forward and backward linkages between manufacturing industries in Thika (Central Province, Kenya) and the local, national and international space economies. Data relates to 1986 and was collected from 49 large and small-scale firms. The hypothesis that there exist low spatial linkages between Thika's manufacturing industries and the space economy of Thika and of the rest of Kenya, and high linkages between the industries and the space economy of the rest of the world was partially validated. Capital equipment linkages with the rest of the world were stronger than those with the local area or the rest of Kenya. Raw material linkages with the local area were weak, with the rest of the country fairly well developed, and contrary to expectations, weak with the rest of the world. Market linkages with the local area were fairly well developed; national and international market linkages were generally weak. The major deficiency in Thika's industrial structure is the existence of weak capital linkages with the local area. Abstr., bibliogr., notes, ref. |
