Abstract: | Examines to what extent kinship is still a basis for cooperation between households in two rural Ciskei villages: Mkhobeni, a village in the Amatola Basin near Alice, relatively unaffected by betterment schemes, where neighbourhood relationships (neighbours are often also kinsmen) have thus remained fairly constant for a long period, and Chatha, a village in the Keiskammahoek area, much more drastically affected by betterment, where neighbourhood relationships have undergone a radical change. The significant criteria for cooperation and assistance between cultivating households in Mkhobeni appear to be proximity and friendship, rather than kinship ties by themselves. The two significant factors relating to the recruitment of agricultural assistance in Chatha appear to be kinship and former village-section membership. Bibliogr., notes. |
