Abstract:Using data from the May 1984 census in Ethiopia, the authors present and briefly examine a rural and an urban population distribution map. The smallest administrative unit with census data, the woreda (subdistrict), is taken as the basis for analysing the rural population. Of a total of 580 woreda, 463 had population data. Census takers were unable to operate in rural areas in the north, confining their work to the larger towns, and in the demographically unstable areas of pastoral nomadism in the Ogaden. For these areas data are described at the awraja (district) level. Ref.
