Abstract: | While economic integration is now one of the more salient features of the political economy of West Africa, most observers have stressed the difficulties experienced by integration schemes in the region. Focusing on ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States), this paper reviews some of these problems, particularly political factors (political instability, notions of sovereignty), the problem of dependency and neocolonialism, and the inequitable distribution of costs and benefits. Taken together, these problems raise serious questions about the viability of economic integration in West Africa. Notes, ref. |
