Abstract:The South African National Party (NP) has scored its tenth consecutive general election victory and can look forward to celebrating its fortieth year in power in 1988. Does this remarkable performance mean the NP can be expected to rule for many decades still, or is it entering its period of decline? This article explains the distortion brought about by the South African electoral system and shows that the NP now has a strong support base in the English-speaking and immigrant communities. Over a period this new support base will have its influence on the party structure.
