Abstract: | Study of the role of Christian missionaries in the field of African health in colonial Zimbabwe (1893-1957), focusing on the history of four major mission hospitals: the American Congregational Church hospital at Mount Selinda (opened in 1893), the Dutch Reformed Church hospital at Morgenster (1894), the American Methodist Episcopal Church hospital at Nyadiri (1925), and the Church of Sweden hospital at Mnene (1925). The study shows that the medical missionaries not only relieved a great deal of suffering among Africans, especially in rural areas where initially government hospitals and clinics were either very few of nonexistent, but also trained African nurses and orderlies at their hospitals.
