| Abstract: | Farming systems studies were carried out in two major bean growing regions of Tanzania, Morogoro and Arusha. Samples of small farmers' families were drawn from three districts - Mgeta, Kilosa, Hananga - with different ecological, rainfall, and soil patterns. For the crop years 1980 to 1982 data were gathered on land availability, crops grown, capital investment in farming, credit availability, labour, value of total production, the place of beans in the farming system, farm operating expenses, income generated from noncrop sales and from off-farm employment and gifts, family living expenditures, net cash income and use of cash earnings. It was found that while the farming systems were not homogeneous, there were many similarities. Given current prices and other conditions, acreage in crops and farm operating expenses were the major determinants of total value of crop production. Thus increasing use of improved technology by farmers to expand acreage or increase yields, is likely to result in higher total value of crop production. It was also ascertained that women play a large part in choosing the bean seeds to be planted and that any new high yielding varieties must therefore be introduced to women as well as to men.
