Abstract:Statistical analysis of the dimensions of the Ballanean burial chambers at the Missiminia cemetery in Sudanese Nubia, dated between 300 and 500 AD, disclosed an age-dependent size. Males possessed greater burial chambers than females, although the difference was statistically insignificant. Differences in the size of burial chambers varied somewhat with the type of grave, some having very high burial chambers (represented by simple rectangular pits), others having extaordinarily broad and somewhat higher burial chambers. The knowledge of the dimensions of the burial chambers in the respective age group made it possible to reconstruct the character and order of double burials as well as the probable age of demographically undetermined persons. Comparison with the dimensions of burial chambers in the Ballanean cemetery at Wadi Qitna, some 500 kilometres to the north, in Egyptian Nubia, showed that they grew less intensively and were shorter in adulthood than in all types of Missiminia.
