Abstract:In this bibliographical essay covering data in English journals, monographs and books published between 1970 and 1987, the author addresses both historical and current wildlife issues, and the African environment in relationship to the efforts of conservation and wildlife management. He notes that the preservationist attitude of colonial days has changed to conservation by wise use. However, despite achievements in the field of wildlife biology, the African wildlife manager is still faced with the stark problem of managing and utilizing resources in fragile and poorly researched ecosystems. At the same time, conservation has to come to terms with competing claims of landuse. A change of attitude, from excluding rural African populations to involving them through economic participation in game utilization schemes, is being witnessed, although poaching remains a problem. More positive advances have been made in the field of passive utilization of wildlife through tourism. Bibliogr., ref.
