Abstract: | This article is concerned with identifying the significance, causes and types of violence in police operations and role performance in postcolonial Ghana, using information gathered through close observation, unstructured interviews and pertinent documentary sources. Eight types of police violence are distinguished. An examination of these eight types reveals historical and other social factors underlying police violence in Ghana. Since the police institution is an integral wing of the wider State system, the article begins with a concise summary of the salient features and trends which characterize the Ghanaian State.
