Abstract: | Many African and Western scholars place (Western) dramatic literature at the apex of dramatic art, looking at anything outside its structure as 'baby' drama that one day will develop into the Western type. This study considers this theory as a myth and proposes to look at dramatic art as culturally conditioned and oriented. Its functions and validity, though carrying certain universal imports, are first and foremost those ascribed to it by the relevant indigenous culture. The study pays special attention to the association of the traditional African festival drama with festivity and to the sociocultural and artistic implications of the traditional African festival theatre.
