Abstract:The journey of Lionel Decle in the first half of 1893 and that of Ewart Grogan in late 1898 and early 1899 and the written accounts of their travels, both published in 1900, provide a good deal of information on conditions in British Central Africa in the early days of the Protectorate and the considerable number of changes which took place in the intervening half decade. The observations they recorded highlight a number of salient features of the country in those times. The article examines in particular those relating to communications, government activities, health and the economy, and the changes which can be detected between the two visits. Note, ref.
