Abstract: | Because of the difficulty of the terrain, the development of land-based transportation in the Niger Delta region (Nigeria) is minimal and water transportation (speedboats, inboard and outboard engine boats) predominates. On the basis of a questionnaire survey, the author analyses the basic characteristics of travel in the area, with information on the socioeconomic characteristics of respondents, travel frequency, purpose and places visited, monetary expenditure on travel, mode choice and reason for choice, and transport problems encountered. The results tend to imply that the choice of destination and of mode of travel are the most significant dimensions of travel behaviour in this area, while the most important socioeconomic variables are age and education. The propensity to travel was also found to be closely related to the nature of occupation, travel usually being undertaken for occupational purposes. Furthermore, in transportation problem regions such as the Niger Delta, the choice of a mode of travel is determined not so much by its characteristics as by its availability when needed. Bibliogr. |
