Abstract: | Calabar, capital of Cross River State, Nigeria, is taken as an example of the environmental problems created by rapid, unplanned urbanization and industrialization. About 70 percent of Calabar's inhabitants live in a town that was not planned. Facilities are stretched and environmental pollution from sewage and garbage is rife. The few industries are located near residential areas. Pollution of water and air by these industries is compounded by pollution from the exhaust emissions of cars. The author calls upon the government to legislate for the control of environmental pollution. Abstr., notes, ref. |
