Abstract: | Up to 1974, the Nigerian economy was self-sufficient in the production of food. In recent years, however, Nigeria has become a net importer of basic foods. Now, with the decline in petroleum earnings, the notion of self-sufficiency in food production has reemerged. The author attempts to establish when the Nigerian economy commenced as a dependent food economy, the magnitude of the dependency, and the effectiveness of government policy meant to arrest the situation.
