Abstract:Since the start of the eighties the South African economy has failed abysmally to achieve its stated objectives (improvement of the standard of living, economic growth, creation of employment, internal and external competitiveness, and the curbing of inflation). These objectives have since become structural problems inherent in the South African economy. This article restates the role which productivity can play in dealing with these problems. This is followed by an analysis of productivity in the South African manufacturing sector. It reveals unwelcome tendencies especially since 1978, with significant negative implications for its competitiveness, growth potential and ability to create employment. The final section of the paper deals with some of the more important factors which slow down the growth of productivity. Bibliogr.
