Abstract: | 'Street-wise' is a pioneer education programme designed to meet the special needs of the South African street child. A response to the felt needs of the children themselves, it is geared to the restoration of the dignity of the individual children and the fulfillment of their potential. The project, still in its developmental phase and only operating in Johannesburg, is an initiative of the Homes and Orphans Fund and relies exclusively on donations. The article describes the origins of the programme, its educational principles, practical aims and implementation, remediation, and liaison with other organizations. Ref. |
