Abstract:Six folktales form the Nkem people of Ogoja, Cross River State, Nigeria, are presented with English translations. The tales were selected from a larger collection for their wide range of themes, variety of characters, and narration techniques. Three stories - 'Co-wives and their children', 'The origin of medicines', and 'A farmer and a bird' - were recorded as told by A. Ishadu, three others - 'The chameleon and the goat', 'The he-goat and the tortoise', and 'The hare and the crocodile' - as told by I. and A. Idaguko. A Nkem-English and an English-Nkem glossary have been included. Bibliogr., notes.
