Abstract:Collection of 23 papers presented at an international symposium on European-language sources for the history of sub-Saharan Africa before 1900, which was held in Bad Homburg in July 1986. An introduction by the editors and seven general papers by A. JONES (two papers), P.E.H. HAIR, D. HENIGE, M. JOHNSON, E. OPGENOORTH, and E. van den BOOGAART are followed by 16 papers with a regional focus dealing respectively with Zimbabwe (D.N. BEACH), Senegambia (C. BECKER), Ethiopia (C. BECKINGHAM), East Africa (R.C. BRIDGES), Western Africa (J.D. FAGE), Sahara and Sudan (A.G.B. FISHER and H.J. FISHER), Angola (B. HEINTZE; J.C. MILLER and J.K. THORNTON), Kongo (A. HILTON; J.K. THORNTON), Gold Coast/Ghana (R. JENKINS; A. van DANTZIG), the 'Slave Coast', between the Volta and Lagos Rivers (R. LAW), the West Sudan (G. SPITTLER), Central Africa (J.
