Abstract:In this paper, an attempt is made to provide deeper insights into Igbo life, worldview and cosmography through the analysis of early migrations from the Igbo primary core to new settlements in southeastern Nigeria based on the exigencies of population density, social segmentation and emerging patterns of agricultural practices. The author argues that the Igbo worldview and cosmology is a product of the dynamics of the above factors. However, while emerging Igbo subcultures introduced greater flexibility and variations to Igbo life, the ownership of shared communal symbols (war drums, men's council houses, ritual markers) and their strategic location at the centre of Igbo settlements points to the assertion of group solidarity in matters of social, ritual and political control.
