Abstract:English translation of a Dutch pamphlet recounting the voyage of Admiral Jan Dirksz Lam in 1625 which was published anonymously in Amsterdam in 1626 under the title 'Waerachtich verhael van de gantsche reyse ghedaen by den eersamen Jan Dircksz Lam, als Admirael van een vloot Schepen uyt de vereenichde Nederlanden: Ende voorts vande nederlaghe aent Kasteel de Myna, op de kust van Guinea voorghevallen. Alles ghestelt by een loofwaerdich Persoon die selfs alles ghesien, ende met nauwe opletthinghe beschreven heeft'. Lam's ships had set out for Brazil, but when they reached a latitude of 4 degrees N, they were becalmed and scurvy broke out. It was therefore decided to head for Sierra Leone and recuperate. The document contains some useful information on 17th-century Sierra Leone, for instance on hunting, rice cultivation, and prostitution. Notes, ref.
